Furnace Oil (FO)

Furnace Oil (FO)

Furnace Oil is a dark, viscous, residual fuel oil obtained from crude petroleum distillation after lighter fractions like diesel, kerosene, and petrol are removed. It is mainly used in furnaces, boilers, kilns, and power generation units as an industrial heating fuel.

Uses and Applications

  • Industrial Fuel: Widely used in boilers, thermal heaters, foundry and glass furnaces, and other heat-producing equipment.
  • Power Generation: Fuels slow-speed engines and captive power plants (e.g., DG sets).
  • Bunkering: Occasionally used as marine or bunker fuel in lower-grade applications.
  • Heating Medium: Applied in processes like air-preheaters and industrial heaters.
  • Economic Advantage: More cost-effective than coal, with advantages like less ash and cleaner burning (when specifications are met).
